What if the world was turned upside down tomorrow? Whether it be by a natural disaster, by disease, or by economic collapse just how much could you count on your neighbors? The government? Your church? What if the change wasn’t just about how people lived but also about what it meant to be human?

This is the story that “The God Virus” tells. The two main characters in this book come from opposing view points: one is a scientist, the other is highly religious. As they change and as the world changes around them they must come to grips not only with the changes, but also how their different beliefs can be reconciled. Religion and science clash, combine, and come out as a sort of understanding of how perhaps the two are not as incompatible as some people believe.

I highly recommend this book for anyone that enjoys a good post-apocalyptic read. Additionally, the thoughts on religion and science would make it a good read for anyone that would like to see just how compatible they really are even with our limited amount of knowledge today.

Description:
A virus from billions of years in the past has emerged from ancient salt beds with devastating results. As the virus turns evolution on its head, people are changed into monsters, animals begin to demand their rights, and civilization is brought to its knees. The few remaining humans seek safety in the quarantine of walled cities such as the Vatican. They desperately seek a cure, but the only one they find may have results too horrible to contemplate Judeus and Miranda, recent converts to the phylum Porifera, set out with a were-wolfish priest, a planeload of mutating pilgrims, and a sabre-tooth shape-shifting cat on their own journey from Miami to the Vatican. One wants to teach the Pope how to pray in this strange new world. The other wants to stop the cure being developed by the remaining humans. And they both want to get the Pope’s final answer on whether non-humans should marry. With their plane shot down over Africa, they learn that strange events are not limited just to the civilized parts of the world. Is the virus God’s punishment on the world? Or is there no god but the virus? Or is the virus going to create a new god? Can three sponge-monsters straighten this mess out?

Ah, the 4th book in a series. It is usually really good or really bad (like most book 2 offerings). This one was a little middling for me. Let me say that I absolutely adore Imogen Rose, I’m a big fan of her work and she makes sure I get a preview copy. She has an amazing ability to bring the people and places in her books into my own reality and I sometimes feel like I kinda of know them – if Arizona were to walk by me in the mall, it wouldn’t phase me to stop and say hello.

This book picks up where Equilibrium left off very well… and then I kind of felt like it meandered a bit. It does manage to pick back up and the story straightens back out about one third of way in. There did feel like a bit of a disconnect there in the first part of the book. While I’m complaining, I’ll also say the cliff hanger might have been too much as well. No, you cannot please me.

I’m going to try to not spoil it, but there’s a phone call early on in the book that made me grin. I nearly wet myself hoping that two people would meet like I’ve been waiting for since book 1. I won’t share if it happened or not… but… well, you’ll see!

The writing and editing, as always, was absolutely spot on in this book. Imogen has always delivered nothing less than darn near perfection in that respect. I like that she is consistent in that regard. I do think it could have dealt with a little bit more of a content edit to straighten out a straggling plot point or two. Or perhaps that was on purpose for book 5? Hmmm…

Here’s what you really need to know about this entire series… it’s clean. There’s a few curse words (not a big deal, my kids hear worse in Elementary School) but it’s interesting and really well done young adult books. The characters (even the bad guys) are very likable. I especially like the main character, Arizona. I’ve watched her grow up in these books and I find her to be a very likable teenager (yes, I realize that’s a huge oxymoron). Honestly, she’s a great kid.

At the end of the day, I recommend this for teenagers, pre-teens and adults alike. I’m 30-something and I totally wanna hang out with Arizona and the crew.

Each and every story left me wanting more from each author. The stories are diverse, interesting, and most of all, fun to read.

There is probably something in this book for everyone, and for most people, a whole lot! There is time travel, space opera, alternate realities, life on the moon, and even on the future of preventing terrorism. Did I mention even a little bit of fantasy starring Sherlock Holmes?

Truthfully, I didn’t realize how long this book was when I sat down to read it. Every story is a page turner, and I went from one to the next. 527 pages of amazing stories.

I loved this book and am ready for more!

Even fewer can say that they’ve done it in an interesting, fun, and all together different fashion. 329 is one of those that have done this tremendous task and has done it well!

329 starts at the beginning of time. Well, actually, it starts .000001 seconds AFTER the absolute beginning of time, but I think the beginning of time is close enough. 329 is a love story of sorts, with the main character being 4 times 10 to the 36th power. As one of only 10 to the 93rd power protons in the universe, 4 times 10 to the 36th leads a pretty interesting life.

It all starts when he meets, bonds, and falls in love with 329. Unfortunately, after a scant 718 million years they are separated. 329 is the story of 4 times 10 to the 36th power life after 329 and his search for her.

Is the story funny? No, not really. Is it exciting? I wouldn’t say so, no. However it is extremely well written and includes situations that will be very familiar to everyone. This story is highly recommend for lovers of science, or science fiction, or for anyone who knows what it is like to be separated from a loved one.

Description:
The atoms that compose your body were around long before you were born and will remain long after you’re dead. Their brief sojourn with you is a tiny episode within their life in this universe. This short story traces the path of a single hydrogen atom from the Big Bang to the edge of the universe. If we could ask an atom to recount its adventures perhaps this is the story it would tell.
This intriguing novel of science fiction and government cover up is not only fast-paced, but very well written. I blazed through this one in just a few days and lost quite a few hours of sleep staying up late to find out “what’s next”.

The books is very well polished. There is no confusing dialog and I didn’t see any glaring issues with the timeline or grammar. If the author had not contacted me with a gift copy of this book, I would not never guessed it was independently published. Well done, Mr. Talbot.

Where this books shines and shines brightly is in character development. By the end of this novel, I felt like I knew Jack and why he was driven. All of the characters have such rich personalities, yet each very distinctive. None of them ran together for me. I also liked that while this appears to be a first in a planned series, it was a complete story. No big cliffhangers, but just enough of a tease to make me look forward to reading the next one.

The only real problem I had with this book was how the fast forward of time occurred. While the author handled it well, it felt a little too “dumped”. Like “okay, let’s stop here and just pick right up – the readers will have to fend for themselves.” However, I’m not sure if it was entirely a bad thing because it did make the big shock an even bigger shocker. I’m a bit torn on that one.

Overall, I love conspiracy theories and while this one was a bit far-fetched (too far reaching), I am still half convinced it’s true

I would recommend this book to those who like a good suspense reader as well as light SciFi fans.

“The Planet Was Smoking”

In the nineteen-sixties, a group of wealthy men concludes that it’s already too late to stop global warming from destroying the planet. But they have a plan to save themselves.

Twenty years later, Jack Crowley and Jim Patterson stumble onto the conspiracy, and every answer they find is accompanied by more questions – and more deaths.

Jack is a former idealist, turned cynical by his years working as a New York tabloid editor. But his enthusiasm returns as he looks into the work of a NASA scientist who tells Jack about cover-ups at the space agency. Jim is a detective with little patience for conspiracy nuts. But he hates loose ends, and is unable to let go of the inconsistencies in another suspicious NASA death. Soon, his investigation leads him to Jack, and they join forces.

As Jack and Jim dig deeper, they are targeted by the type of killers that don’t usually miss. From Washington to Las Vegas to the Middle East, they manage to stay one step ahead of their pursuers in a race to expose the truth, and maybe, just maybe, save the world.

Futuristic mayhem and out of control politics makes for good ride. BUT only if it’s done well. And Mr. Royle can weave a story very well indeed.

The book is nothing to sneeze at, as far as length. I was a bit intimidated and was wondering if the author would be able to keep my attention the whole time. I will admit that I think part of it was a little overwritten but now that I see this is part of a series, I can understand the author may be setting up for the next book, which I’m looking forward to immensely.

The story is really well done. VERY well done, this could easily be a mainstream story at the local grocery store line. It reads very smoothly and the descriptions are top notch; I was totally there with the characters, I was rooting for the good guys and angry about having the Tag Law forced upon me, gosh darn it! I really did enjoy the descriptions and the world that the author created for us, it felt realistic. The dialogue didn’t feel forced and the narrative was smooth.

I didn’t see a single grammatical error. Whether that is because there weren’t any or because I was absorbed in the story, I’m not sure.

I’m interested to see where the author takes us now… I’m not sure where it could possibly go, but I also see that as a hallmark of a good book in a series. It’s a story in and of itself. Even if I don’t read the 2nd the book, I feel like I got a total storyline. Awesome.

I recommend this book to those that enjoy books written about futuristic societies. There’s a lot of information about how the world works in this world and it transports you there.

While I did take away one star because of the overwritten sections (again, this could be setting up the 2nd book), I’m still making this part of my “must read” books for this year.

I really did like it, but it was kind of a departure from the first two books. It was much darker with a bit of a commentary about war and manipulation. I really wasn’t expecting that from this book because the first two, while action packed, were a little more light. This one got pretty heavy at times.

The author does kind of inject her own thoughts about war, but does a good job of not ramming it down your throat. At it’s core, I believe this book is about change, love, loss, and self-destruction. The writing is, of course, fabulous. The descriptions are breathtakingly real.

The writing is also where I think this book stumbles a bit. The middle part of the book is basically one big meander. Katniss can’t seem to get any forward momentum and the book suffers a bit for it. While the author tries to tie everything together and pick up the loose ends, the main character gets the daylights beat out of her, on so many levels. I think the middle of the book could have used some tightening up.

Having said that, I would recommend this book for fans of the this series. It was a fitting end, if not completely satisfying.

Description:
Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins’s groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year.

It really is a great series. I’ve been trying to figure out what to say about this book without giving away too much of the plot to those who haven’t read the first one.

Rather than ruin the book for you, I’m just going to say that it was almost as good as the first book, it felt a little too drawn out in places, but not terrible. The action is still intense and in some ways matured (and in others, not so much). We are also left with a huge cliffhanger ending, so I purchased the 3rd book within 3 minutes of finishing this one.

Darn those series!

Recommended for all that enjoyed The Hunger Games. While The Hunger Games could stand alone, this one does not, you really need to have read the first one (and will want to read the third one right away).

Description:
Gr 7 Up–Every year in Panem, the dystopic nation that exists where the U.S. used to be, the Capitol holds a televised tournament in which two teen “tributes” from each of the surrounding districts fight a gruesome battle to the death. In The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the tributes from impoverished District Twelve, thwarted the Gamemakers, forcing them to let both teens survive. In this rabidly anticipated sequel, Katniss, again the narrator, returns home to find herself more the center of attention than ever. The sinister President Snow surprises her with a visit, and Katniss’s fear when Snow meets with her alone is both palpable and justified. Catching Fire is divided into three parts: Katniss and Peeta’s mandatory Victory Tour through the districts, preparations for the 75th Annual Hunger Games, and a truncated version of the Games themselves. Slower paced than its predecessor, this sequel explores the nation of Panem: its power structure, rumors of a secret district, and a spreading rebellion, ignited by Katniss and Peeta’s subversive victory. Katniss also deepens as a character. Though initially bewildered by the attention paid to her, she comes almost to embrace her status as the rebels’ symbolic leader. Though more of the story takes place outside the arena than within, this sequel has enough action to please Hunger Games fans and leaves enough questions tantalizingly unanswered for readers to be desperate for the next installment.

I have a few friends, one in particular (hi, Lisa!), who have been hounding me to read these for a while. Honestly, it’s YA, it’s somewhat SciFi and the description just didn’t seem to grab me. But I decided that my 100th book would be a nod to my friends and family that are always telling me “Oh, you HAVE to read this book”. So, then…

I got about 5% into the book and was completely disgusted. I think I may have called Lisa a very bad name. You see, I could NOT PUT THE BOOK DOWN. It was darn well nearly physically attached to my hand. I lost sleep, I gasped in certain places, I yelled “no!” a few times, I was, in short, insane for the day it took me to read this one.

The author completely sucks you into this world of the future. Of kids dying as sacrifices to the capital. Of a love triangle. Of family bonds. Of humanity. There is so much going on in the book that it seems like it would be confusing, but in reality, you are so caught up in the entire story that it doesn’t matter. It’s all-encompassing. It’s all-consuming. It’s, as Lisa told me, un-put-down-able.

There are scenes that rip your heart out in this book. I had to remind myself when I was done that it was YA (Young Adult) because I enjoyed it immensely. Most YA material I can take or leave but this had me hitting the “buy” button for the next in the series within 2 minutes of finishing it.

This one makes my must-read list for 2010. I also do not know how to recommend this for, I simply cannot come up with anyone that might not enjoy it. I am not sure I would let my 7-year-old read it, but my 10-year-old would probably enjoy it just as much as my mother or my 70-year-old grandmother would. Read it. Seriously.

Description:
Grade 7 & Up -I n a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’s young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives. Collins’s characters are completely realistic and sympathetic as they form alliances and friendships in the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing. This book will definitely resonate with the generation raised on reality shows like Survivor and American Gladiator. Book one of a planned trilogy

The end of the second book in this series, EQUILIBRIUM (Portal Chronicles Book Two), leaves us with quite a cliff hanger. I’ve been not-so-patiently waiting on the third book to come out. I have major instant gratification problems, so either the author took pity on me or I moaned and groaned enough in public forums that she sent me an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of Quantum just to shut me up. Either way, I was excited to find out what happened next. I’m a 30(mumble) year old woman, but I absolutely adore this young adult series.

It is very rare that I feel a series gets better as it goes on. In fact, the Portal Chronicles is the only one I can think of this year that I’ve felt that way about. It stays true to the storyline, the characters and the location. I didn’t feel the least bit disconnected from the previous two books. It’s one of the things I enjoy most about these books, they are complete stories, she left us hanging a bit on the 2nd one, but there’s no awkward breaks.

This particular book is very well written, very well edited and a great polished product. It is very professionally done and something the author should be very proud to call her final work product. I didn’t see any grammar issues or spelling issues; either I was too sucked into the story to notice or they simply don’t exist (I suspect the latter as Ms. Rose’s previous work has always been well done as well).

The characters were well formed. I felt I got to know more about each of them. Not only the Sigma-W, but all the central characters that we have gotten to know and love were fleshed out even more without delving into long monologues of their childhood or anything that would make me want to dig my eyes out with a spoon. I do wish there was more of Arizona in it, I felt she was absent from too many scenes, but having said that, she’s my favorite YA (Young Adult) book character, she’s a teenager, but she’s not snotty, silly or whiny. We have entirely too many whiny heroines in YA books these days. *cough*Bella*cough* My favorite aspect of the story came with David, but I won’t say anything more and spoil it for the fans.

All-in-all, I think what draws me to these books is that the characters are nice. Even the bad guys are pretty darn good underneath it all. There’s no hate filled tirades, there’s no gratuitous violence (or sex). This one had a few instances of the “s” word, but nothing horrible. But the characters… the characters are very likable. I suspect that the next in the series will be a little darker based on the epilogue, and I think that’s okay too, I think as Arizona and the crew gets older and more mature, they will come to see the darker things in life, but I like that the author let her be a kid, gosh darn it!

As far as the cliff hanger that we were left with in book 2, we are given some resolution. I have to admit I thought it was a bit of a cop out, but I also don’t see where anything else could have happened and still have this book be has fabulous as it truly was, so I’m not going to complain too much about it.

Both of the previous books have gotten four stars from me. They are so well put together, but Quantum brings the story into itself and really gives us a deeper understanding of this world that Imogen Rose has created for us and, for that, I give the book a full 5 stars and put onto my “must read” list for 2010. I would highly suggest checking the first two out before you read this one. The first is PORTAL (Portal Chronicles) and the second is EQUILIBRIUM (Portal Chronicles Book Two).

This book is recommended for Portal fans. The series is recommended for those that light a fun light read. The books are young adult, with light sci-fi and time travel. Fun and fabulous books. Even though the author provided me with this copy for free, I will be buying a copy for my kindle account so I can share with others on my account.
