Super Scratch Programming Adventure! (Covers Version 2): Learn to Program by Making Cool Games

I have had a “Love/Hate” relationship with the Scratch programming language for years. I love it because it is easy to to simple things. I hated it because I never had the time to really dig in. The Super Scratch Programming Adventure! gave me the perfect opportunity to sit back, relax, and give it another shot.

First off, don’t expect a lot from the story. It is meant for kids. However, it is really cute and provides a nice background to what you are doing. You aren’t just learning to program, you are saving the world!

I have seen a couple of reviews that say,”The resource CD was missing.” All of the resources are available for download, it says so right in the book. The book even walks you through how to add them to your projects, even ones not in the book!

Everything is laid out very simply. You read the story, and then there is a project to do. The story is in comic book format, the project is more “text-bookish” but still easy to follow.

Now that I am done, I plan to pass this along to my daughter. She is a 5th grader and I know she’d get a kick out of making her own games!

Overall: 4 stars. Great intro to Scratch and a good way to get started with programming.

Scratch is the wildly popular educational programming language used by millions of first-time learners in classrooms and homes worldwide. By dragging together colorful blocks of code, kids can learn computer programming concepts and make cool games and animations. The latest version, Scratch 2, brings the language right into your web browser, with no need to download software.

In Super Scratch Programming Adventure!, kids learn programming fundamentals as they make their very own playable video games. They’ll create projects inspired by classic arcade games that can be programmed (and played!) in an afternoon. Patient, step-by-step explanations of the code and fun programming challenges will have kids creating their own games in no time.

This full-color comic book makes programming concepts like variables, flow control, and subroutines effortless to absorb. Packed with ideas for games that kids will be proud to show off, Super Scratch Programming Adventure! is the perfect first step for the budding programmer.
