The Long Way Home by Karen McQuestion

I keep waiting on a bad book from this author, but she doesn’t appear to be able to give me that yet. So here I am, again, writing yet another positive review for a Karen McQuestion book. Man, this was good.

It felt real on some level, staged – of course, but the characters felt like people I could know. Neighbors that I hang out with, the old lady we never really see, the weird 20-something upstairs. The book’s fun and quirkiness and reminded me a bit of the journey part of Thelma & Louise. But there’s a deeper level of journey for each of these women.

It’s not about what happens in Vegas. It truly is the journey that takes them there and where they end up both in their lives and in their heads. It was very funny with twists and turns and all that fun stuff, but the depth of character development while entertaining us is really where it shakes out beyond just another chick-lit book. I felt like I knew these women and they were my friends and I was pulling for each and every one of them.

Bottom line, recommended for those that like chick-lit, but also like some depth to their easy reads.

Description:
Marnie’s sorrow over her long-time love’s sudden death is nothing compared to the shock of losing his teenage son Troy (a boy she’s raised for ten years) when he’s whisked away to Las Vegas by his absentee birth mother. Luckily, she meets three unlikely allies at a local grief group who join her on an cross-country road trip to reconnect with him. Along for the ride are fifty-something Rita, still reeling from the murder of her daughter years before; Laverne, Marnie’s reclusive, widowed landlady; and Jazzy, a beautiful young psychic. Together, these four very different women embark on the adventure of their lives–a journey toward reconciliation and healing. Heartwarming, funny, and bittersweet, The Long Way Home is a winning novel of friendship and love from best-selling author Karen McQuestion.
