Pastini Pastaria at 911 SW Taylor in Portland, OR

I was recently in Portland for a business conference and was taking ten people out to dinner. I asked our hotel concierge to recommend a place that was moderately priced (I was paying!) and would be accommodating. He suggested Pastini’s. He called, found out they didn’t take reservations for Thursday nights but the manager on duty told him that they would make sure there wasn’t a problem.

My group of ten ladies walked in and were treated rudely. Not only were we told that they didn’t have room for us and there would be a 45-60 minute wait, but he basically said “you’ll probably just want to leave”. No offer to split the party. No apologies. No offer to seat us in the bar while we waited. All of us felt like we were being told to just go away. A severely disappointing experience. He then demanded I give him the name of who the concierge talked to. Needless to say, we left, where I happily dropped $550 in drinks and dinner at Jake’s Grill a few blocks over.

Would not recommend this place to ANYONE. Avoid.

Great write-up Candy! You hit the nail on the head and we had much more fun at Jake’s Grill anyway.

    Hello Candy,
I am so terribly sorry that you were treated this way at our restaurant! I am just appalled at the treatment you received, we try so hard to accomodate our guests whenever we can. Can you please tell me what night this was and, if you remember, the concierge’s name (and his hotel)? I want to find out what happened and take the appropriate action with our staff, and also get in touch with the concierge to apologize. It’s true we don’t take reservations, but we try to fit in larger parties as soon as possible, as the first person you spoke to mentioned. And we truly are so sorry this happened to you and your group. I would like to, if you will accept it, send you a give certificate by way of apology. If you are willing to give us another try, we would like to show you what Pastini is really about.

    Sincerely,
    Susie Bashel
    Co-owner

    Hello Candy,
I did talk to both our managers and they knew exactly what happened. The Hilton concierge did contact our GM and they discussed our no reservation policy. She told him that we would work with him and his guests as much as possible by trying to fit them in when we could. However, he never confirmed that you were actually coming in and when. So we were really caught in a pickle when you showed up and we had no idea that you were coming, and we were on a 45-60 minute wait already. We truly feel that the concierge did both you and us a disservice here. We will be getting in contact with him to make sure he knows what to do and how we can work with him and his guests.

We do feel very badly that you and your party were the victims in this situation…we wouldn’t have that happen for the world! Please let me know if we can send you a gift certificate for your next visit to Portland…we’d love to do that.

I’m just now getting around to my personal emails here, but I will say after her post here I thought she may care… until she posted on Yelp that we were basically lying and were all angry… I will say we were more disappointed than angry. I would never go here, gift certificate or not, should I be in the area again. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. I do not tolerate rude customer service. Caught in a pickle or not, the manager handled it badly. End of story.
