(Book) The Innocent by Harlan Coben

You really have to suspend all aspects of your common sense to enjoy this book. Luckily, I’m good at that, so I ended up enjoying the book a lot. Even so, there were times when I was just shaking my head saying “really? seriously?”. Convoluted storyline to say the least, BUT…

This was my first book by this author and I really did enjoy it. His character development is simply amazing. With all of the different characters in this book, one would think it would be pretty much surface written, but he did an excellent job of digging into them.

He also kept me turning the pages. He would give just a little bit at the end of the chapter so I HAD to keep reading. Just had to. A well written, well crafted thriller that really did keep me going.

I will say that someone in my book club chose this. It’s not really “book club material” so I’m not sure what the discussion will be like, but at least it was something different 🙂

This is worth a read when you need something to drag you into another world for several hours. It’s definitely one to grab.

Synopsis

“The horror of one night is forever etched in Matt Hunter’s memory: the night he innocently tried to break up a fight – and ended up a killer. Now, nine years after his release from prison, his innocence long forgotten, he’s an ex-con who takes nothing for granted. With his wife, Olivia, pregnant and the two of them closing on a house in his hometown, things are looking up. Until the day Matt gets a shocking, inexplicable video call from Olivia’s phone. And in an instant, the unraveling begins.” A mysterious man who’d begun tailing Matt turns up dead. A beloved nun is murdered. And local and federal authorities – including homicide investigator Loren Muse, a childhood schoolmate of Matt’s with a troubled past of her own – see all signs pointing to a former criminal with one murder already under his belt: Matt Hunter.
