(Book) Dark Time: Mortal Path Book 1 by Dakota Banks

I am more of a Sci-Fi and/or pure “High Fantasy” type reader, so when I picked up Dark Time by Dakota Banks I wasn’t really planning on liking it. However, the cover really drew my attention and I decided to give it a shot. 24 hours later, I am really glad I did. I couldn’t put the book down, the only reason I didn’t finish it sooner was work and strange needs to eat and sleep.

Ms. Banks has crafted a very believable universe based on both myth and archaeological fact. Her characters are very recognizable as people we know from our daily lives from the news: the computer geek, the concerned mother, the greedy industrialist, the DEA agent. She brings these characters and many, many more to life in her novel about what happens when the desire for revenge is gone and the need for salvation has taken its place.

My only complaint about the book is the cliffhanger ending. I would have much preferred a more “clean” ending, perhaps stopping one chapter (or even page) earlier. I still would have bought the next book because I want to know what happens next. However, the blatant “now you have to buy the next book” ending turned me off a bit.

Still, an excellent read and highly recommended.

Three hundred years ago, she sold her soul to a demon. Now she wants it back.

For centuries, the woman calling herself Maliha Crayne has lived a second life—as an assassin for the malevolent creature who owns her soul. A haunted killer with the blood of countless victims on her hands, she has finally discovered a way to nullify the demonic pact that chains her: If she saves a life for every one she has taken, she will be free.

But if she fails, her punishments will be unspeakable, unendurable . . . and neverending.
