(Book) The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness by Dave Ramsey

56

You won’t find anything Earth shattering in this book. It’s a very formulaic approach to paying off your debt and saving for retirement and college. On a personal note, my husband and I are pretty lucky, we don’t have any credit card debt. We only have one little credit card that we pay off every two weeks. We have other debt, of course, but well… let’s just say that we learned our lesson early in our marriage – did you know that bars in Hawaii take credit cards? Or that you shouldn’t finance home improvements on a money pit house on a credit card? Yeah. We, of course, have other debt.

But.. I think this book did teach me a few things about how to figure out how to invest for retirement (I appear to be doing half of it, yay!) and college for the kids (not so much).

I won’t be doing anything crazy like selling my cars, we’d only break even on them and frankly, I am not willing to give those up. Plus let’s assume you don’t have the cash to buy a beater car to drive. You sell your car. Then what? I was disturbed that he left some parts out of this first baby step. As I said, I’m just not willing to give up my minivan and I’d be risking my life if I even suggested selling my husband’s PT Cruiser.

BUT I think if someone has gotten themselves in serious hot water, this is a great book to help them “go drastic” and get themselves out. I’ll be putting some of his ideas into place in our lives to better fit who we are – and I figure if we go for it, we can probably be debt free (except for the house) in a few years, which is completely acceptable to me.

The only part of the book I didn’t like is the scripture and god references. I think it was necessary, but everyone is entitled to write/believe as they wish.

As with any finance book, take what you need/want from it. I took away a lot of good from it and will leave some on the table for others to pick through 🙂

Synopsis

The success stories speak for themselves in this book from money maestro Dave Ramsey. Instead of promising the normal dose of quick fixes, Ramsey offers a bold, no-nonsense approach to money matters, providing not only the how-to but also a grounded and uplifting hope for getting out of debt and achieving total financial health.

Ramsey debunks the many myths of money (exposing the dangers of cash advance, rent-to-own, debt consolidation) and attacks the illusions and downright deceptions of the American dream, which encourages nothing but overspending and massive amounts of debt. “Don’t even consider keeping up with the Joneses,” Ramsey declares in his typically candid style. “They’re broke!”

The Total Money Makeover isn’t theory. It works every single time. It works because it is simple. It works because it gets to the heart of the money problems: you.
